About Carla

"Starhawk says, 'Where there is fear there is power'.  I now know what this means.  It means turning and staring the fear dead in its eyes then walking towards it and passing right through it.  At that point Power will greet me and We will embrace."  Carla Royal

"Carla can take you to the heart of collapse, your own and the world's, and she'll walk with you as you heal your way through it... slowly, side-by-side in Turtle time, as it was always meant to be."  Timothy Bennett, Writer/Director, What a Way to Go:  Life at the End of Empire.

"Carla's perspective is incisive and her work essential in the current milieu of climate chaos, energy depletion, and economic upheaval. Unlike most therapists, Carla is completely up to speed on collapse and wants to support people emotionally in navigating it."  Caroyln Baker, Speaking Truth to Power.

"Carla was trapped in the culture of consumption and broke free. She sees the light at the end of tunnel and helps others find their path toward that light."  Sally Erickson, Producer, What a Way to Go:  Life at the End of Empire.

“Carla is an incredibly empathic listener who is fully present with the client. She facilitates the client's journey by asking the questions which help guide the client to their own answers. She also works well with massage therapists willing to adjunct with counselors and mentors in providing overall care and promoting the well-being of mutual clients.”  Karen Windham, LMT

BACKGROUND & EXPERTISE

For over 20 years I have accompanied people on their life journeys. I have worked with people from diverse backgrounds helping them come to peace with themselves, others and the world in which they live. My formal education includes a B.A. in Sociology and a Master’s degree in Counseling from the University of South Carolina. I developed a private practice in Raleigh, NC as a Licensed Professional Counselor for 13 years before moving to Virginia. I then worked as a therapist for a residential treatment facility before starting my mentoring practice.

As a mentor, I no longer view people from a psychopathology (mental illness) model.  Nor do I make diagnoses about people's mental health or
illness. Instead I help people meet the challenges and difficulties of their lives by addressing the larger social and environmental context.  I commit to support my clients to be fully conscious, to create an authentic life, to be an inspiration to those they love and to be responsible to the larger community of life.

For much greater detail on my life and my mentoring practice please read Carolyn Baker's interview with me.

You may want to see what mentoring is all about. I'd love to meet you to talk about what mentoring offers and if it is something you'd enjoy and benefit from.
